COOLANGATTA/QLD (Wednesday 9th August, 2017): It’s not often the best of the best in Australian surfing get to compete in a team environment at the highest level.
The fight for national club champion bragging rights will be fiercer than ever when the 2017/18 nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series gets underway on the Gold Coast on August 26th.
Some of the biggest names in the sport like Matt Wilkinson, Tyler Wright, Joel Parkinson, Stephanie Gilmore and Adrian Buchan all take immense pride in representing their respective clubs at state and national level.
Buchan, who is the Avoca Boardriders Club Captain, said it would take a massive effort for his club to go back to back at the National Final to be held again at Newcastle beach in February 2018.
“Having the opportunity to surf for Avoca in the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle and give back to the club and community that have supported me since I started on my pro-surfing journey is a great honour and something I do with immense pride,” said Buchan.
“Winning the title last year for Avoca was a career highlight. We will be back in 2017 just as hungry and determined. Winning back to back is our goal and I know we can do it if we respect our opponents and prepare, surf and compete with the fierceness that won us the title.”
The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series involves more than 60 of Australia’s best boardriders clubs in eight state qualifying rounds and culminates in a National Final in Newcastle, NSW on February 16-18, 2018 for 24 clubs.
“We are so excited to be involved again with such an iconic club series like the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle. nudie had such a brilliant time at last year’s event and we can’t wait to see Australia’s best talent hit the surf again,” said Brooke Tierney, Head of Marketing – Monde Nissin Australia.
The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle has official sanctioning by the World Surf League (WSL), which allows Australian WSL Championship Tour surfers (men and women) the opportunity to represent their local boardriders club at respective state qualifying events and the National Final.
The prestigious National Final event includes the nudie trials on Friday 16th February 2018, which will be the final qualifying opportunity for clubs in the Newcastle region for a Wildcard position for the National Final.
“For the second year running, Newcastle City Council is proud to support the event that decides the best boardriding club in Australia,” said Newcastle City Council Interim CEO Jeremy Bath.
“It’s a great warm up for Newcastle Surfest, the event we’ve supported as a major sponsor for several decades. This year visitors are going to see some incredible improvements along our coastline after a $10 million civil works program in the city’s east and as the local building boom continues.”
There’s $150,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs for clubs across the National Series including $24,000 prize money split between eight State events and $82,000 prize money across the Newcastle National Final with the winning boardriders taking home a huge $20,000 and an overseas trip for 6 surfers from the winning club thanks to World Surfaris valued at $30,000. To top things off, there’s an additional $14,000 in prizes across the series.
“Now in its fifth year, the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle has become a critical program as part of the Surfing Australia sport development program,” said Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark.
“We are also extremely excited to be hosting the national final at Newcastle for the second year and thank our valued partners for supporting the prestigious event series.”
The purpose of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle program is to build the profile and capacity of community boardriders clubs Australia-wide. In the past 4 years, Surfing Australia has invested over $600,000 into Surfing Australia affiliated boardriders clubs as part of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle series.
Major sponsors of the 2017/18 series include the naming rights partner nudie and supporting sponsors Oakley, Nikon, Woolworths, Milwaukee, Destination NSW, Newcastle City Council, World Surfaris, Fox Sports, World Surf League, mySURF.tv and Surfing Australia.
