Gold Coast, Queensland Friday 25th August, 2017 – Four current World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) athletes will line up to represent their local boardriders clubs this weekend at the Queensland qualifying leg of the 2017/18 nudie Australian Boardriders Battle on the Gold Coast. Mick Fanning (Tugun, QLD) will represent Kirra Surfriders, Joel Parkinson (Tweed Heads, NSW) will surf for Snapper Rocks Surfriders, Bede Durbidge (Currumbin, QLD) and Ethan Ewing (Point Lookout, QLD) will surf for their home club, Stradbroke Island’s renowned Point Lookout Boardriders.

A short-range forecast shows a southerly swell on it’s way to the coast that will build over night and combine with southerly winds tomorrow to provide excellent conditions for southern Gold Coast beach breaks. Organisers are confident that conditions will be well suited to the high caliber draw for Saturday’s one-day competition.

Led by ex CT surfer Jay ‘Bottle’ Thompson (Burleigh Heads, QLD), reigning champions Burleigh Heads Boardriders will be looking to claim back to back victories in 2017 but will have their work cut out for them as they face 2016 runner up Point Lookout Boardriders. Led by former Pipe Master, Triple Crown Champion and long-time World Tour surfer and Straddie hero Bede Durbidge and with Australia’s most recent WSL CT surfer Ethan Ewing also representing the boardriders club this year, the Burleigh Heads Boardriders will be on high alert this weekend. Not to be overlooked are the 2014 National Champions, Snapper Rocks Surfriders who will call on heavy artillery this weekend, utilising 2012 World Champion Joel Parkinson. Joining Snapper’s arsenal on Saturday will be Dean Morrison (Coolangatta, QLD), Mitch Parkinson (Coolangatta, QLD), Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, QLD), Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW) and Jay Phillips (Coolangatta, QLD).

“Boardriders clubs are the foundation of surfing in Australia and provide surfers with the first steps in their competitive careers. The nudie series provides these tops surfers with the opportunity to give back to their clubs who have supported them throughout their journey,” said Surfing Queensland Events Manager Dev Lahey.

This weekend’s event will see 12 of the best boardriders clubs in Queensland battle it out for a spot in the national final set to run in Newcastle, NSW in February 2018. Participating clubs include Burleigh Heads Boardriders, Snapper Rocks Surfriders, North End Boardriders (Narrowneck, Main Beach), North Shore Boardriders (Maroochydore), MNM Boardriders (Mermaid, Nobby’s Beach), Point Lookout Boardriders, Kirra Surfriders, Coolum Boardriders, Windansea Surfclub (Moffat Beach), Palm Beach Boardriders, D’bah Boardriders and Noosa Boardriders.

The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle series involves more than 60 of Australia’s best boardriders clubs in eight state qualifying rounds and culminates with the top 24 clubs battling it out in a national final set to run in Newcastle, NSW on February 16-18, 2018.
